Vitamin B12 is essential for the development and function of the central nervous system, formation of healthy red blood cells and synthesis of DNA. If deficient irreversible damage, in particular to nerves and the brain can occur.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 is seen commonly in the UK and can cause a variety of health conditions. A typical hallmark of vitamin B12 deficiency is anaemia (megaloblastic) as a result of abnormal red blood cell formation.

Vitamin B12 is a vitamin naturally present in some foods, mainly present in foods of animal origin, including meat, fish, dairy products and milk. Whilst plant based foods do not contain natural sources of vitamin B12, some sources of food, such as breakfast cereals can be fortified with vitamin B12.

What to expect at your appointment

A full consultation will take place including medical history. Concerns and expectations will be discussed and which vitamin boost is likely to best suit you. Questions can be answered and you will meet Dr Adam Culverwell who will discuss your current medical requirements, and, if happy, consent and prescribe the relevant medication.

The treatment is then administered by Kate in the relaxing space where you will be encouraged to relax on the therapy couch. The treatment is quick and fairly painless, feeling much like a flu vaccination in the upper arm. You will be welcome to sit in the waiting area afterwards, however, you should be fine to leave and resume normal activities straight away.

  • There are many potential symptoms but these include:

  • Vitamin B12 can be seen in anyone however there are particular individuals more at risk:

    Older Adults

    Pernicious anaemia: this condition leads to a loss of a compound called Intrinsic Factor, essential for the absorption of vitamin b12 from the gut. Therefore without treatment individuals will develop vitamin B12 deficiency.

    Gastric-Intestinal conditions: Individuals with conditions, such as certain forms of gastritis, Crohn’s / Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or Coeliacs disease regularly cannot absorb enough vitamin B12 from food.

    Medications: A common group of medications called Proton Pump Inhibitors used in treatment of gastro-eoesophageal reflux (heartburn) and gastritis can inhibit the absorption of vitamin B12. Examples of this medication include omeprazole and lansoprazole. 

    Prior surgery: In particular those having undergone weight loss surgery or have had part of the stomach or small bowel removed.

    Vegetarians: Vegetarians and vegans have a higher rate of vitamin B12 deficiency as natural sources of vitamin B12 are limited to animal products.

    Alcohol Excess: Vitamin B deficiencies are more common in those who consume larger quantities of alcohol.

  • There is no recognised upper limit for vitamin B12 as there is a low potential for toxicity. The body simply does not store excessive amounts beyond what it requires.
