COSMETIC AND MEDICAL MICRONEEDLING

COSMETIC AND MEDICAL MICRONEEDLING ︙

Medical micro needling is a dermatological procedure that stimulates the body's healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production, which helps improve the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks.

Microneedling involves using small, medical-grade needles to create micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate elastin and collagen production in the skin without causing visible damage. The process uses different sized needles and treatment depths depending on the area and indication.

Regular use of microneedling can thicken skin, smooth scars of all sizes, and soften the appearance of wrinkles.

What can we treat with microneedling?

We can treat a variety of dermatological conditions and skin blemishes, some examples include:

  • Wrinkles

  • Sun damage

  • Pigmentation

  • Scarring

  • Stretch Marks

  • Hair thinning

  • Tired looking and dull skin

What to expect at your appointment

During

Microneedling is described by most patients as uncomfortable rather than painful. The newest types of derma pens cause the least discomfort as they deliver treatment extremely quickly using ultra fine needles.

You can chose to use a topical anaesthetic to numb the skin to make the procedure more comfortable, please bring this with you if required.  It will normally take 15-20 minutes for the topical anaesthetic to work and 20 to 30 minutes for the treatment.

Some people find topical ice packs sufficient before treatments, especially for non-facial areas, many people tolerate the treatment without any prep.

Once your skin is cleaned and cleansed, the microneedling device is glided over your skin with an application of nourishing serum. Each column of needles penetrates into the dermis of the skin allowing the serum to easily penetrate and soak in.  The column will close rapidly, enabling the skin to recover quickly – often in the same day. The treated skin will show a minor reaction and micro bleeding is the desired end point of the treatment.

After the microneedling, a cooling face mask will be applied for 10 mins post procedure.

Aftercare

After a microneedling treatment your body will start to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen is formed, new skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced. It can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long-lasting enhancement.

Your skin may sting slightly after treatment and some redness can remain for a couple of days. You will be advised to apply sunscreen regularly and avoid extremes of heat and cold, exposure to the sun, saunas, sun beds and vigorous exercise for 48 hours.

Follow up

Your practitioner will recommend the number of microneedling treatments required to achieve the desired results. Treatment consists of a series of microneedling procedures with approximately 4-6 weeks between them. Commonly 3-4 treatments are required.

In the treatment of stretch marks, acne scars and other types of scarring, up to 6 procedures may be necessary.

Home care skin routines will be discussed at the initial consultation. It is essential to work with your practitioner on your home skin care routine as commitment to skin care and skin health away from the clinic is crucial for optimum results. Your practitioner will help advise you on this.
